Wisdom teeth are the third and final set of molars that erupt in the upper and lower back corners of adult mouths. Not all wisdom teeth need to be removed. For some people, wisdom teeth erupt and function normally and cause no problems. Unfortunately, most people experience problems with wisdom teeth. In most cases, the teeth erupt too close to existing permanent teeth, causing crowding, improper bites, and gum infection.
If your wisdom teeth are causing problems, this could mean that they are impacted. If you experience any of the following symptoms, you may have an impacted wisdom tooth:
Impacted wisdom teeth can be extremely painful, as well as harmful to your oral health. Many people need to have their wisdom teeth extracted to avoid serious problems. In general, the lack of the four wisdom teeth does not hamper one’s ability to bite down, speak or eat properly.
